WHAT'S NEW AT REPRODUCTIVE ASSOCIATES OF DELAWARE?

SUPPORT GROUP LAUNCHED WITH THE SPONSORSHIP OF REPRODUCTIVE ASSOCIATES OF DELAWARE

Recent collaboration between PCOSupport Chapter Development Coordinator, Lesa Childers and the staff of Reproductive Associates of Delaware has resulted in a successful kick off meeting of DE PCOSupport. Several months ago, Childers contacted Dr. Ron Feinberg, IVF Director at Reproductive Associates, in hopes of gaining his support in an effort to begin a group in the Delaware area. As professional members of the PCOSA, Dr. Feinberg and his partner, Dr. Barbara McGuirk, embraced the idea of sponsoring a group in the Wilmington area and designated Community Relations Coordinator, Melissa Young, as contact and temporary coordinator of the project. Childers was invited by the group to speak at the first ever meeting on February 8, 2000 in the lobby of Reproductive Associates. This meeting resulted in a three hour discussion of PCOS related topics, a resolve by the group to meet monthly, and several volunteers to assist with coordination of future meetings.

To further encourage involvement, Reproductive Associates sponsored a volunteer dinner later in the month. Those PCOSupport volunteers attending received a paid membership to the PCOSA. Melissa Young reports that the women attending will begin training very soon with Childers for their new chapter coordinator positions and are eager to move toward Chapter in Formation status. The commitment by Reproductive Associates to see the support group achieve success and adequate sponsorship is commendable and an excellent example of a successful partnership between the PCOSA and the medical community.

Dr. Feinberg was a contributor to the March 2000 Woman's Day PCOS article and will be a guest speaker at the PCOSA Conference in June. He is also the Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board of the PCOS pavilion at OBGYN.net. When asked what he and his partner hope to accomplish by assisting with the development of DE PCOSupport, Dr. Feinberg states, "We hope that the Delaware PCOS Support Chapter can help the thousands of women who likely endure PCOS-related problems in our area."

REPRODUCTIVE SURGERY: AN ALTERNATIVE TO IVF

Our Reproductive Surgery Program is second to none. All laparoscopic procedures are performed together by Drs. McGuirk and Feinberg, providing their combined surgical experience with thousands of these procedures. Drs. McGuirk and Feinberg have been working together since 1993, when they initially were colleagues in Fellowship (post-residency training) at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. At that time, they developed an approach that allows for the maximal chance of surgical repair or treatment, depending on what is found at the time of laparoscopy. This surgical team boasts high rates of pregnancy following laparoscopy, thus avoiding the need for costly IVF procedures in many situations. Reproductive Associates also has the first pregnancy in Delaware following a laparoscopic tubal reanastomosis (tubal re-attachment) procedure. Unlike traditional tubal repair procedures requiring hospitalization, long recovery, and a larger scar, patients leave the hospital the same day following the laparoscopic reanastomosis procedure.

IMPLANTATION RESEARCH AT YALE: UNDERSTANDING THE ENDOMETRIUM

In collaboration with the Yale Reproductive Pathology and Placental Unit, under the direction of Dr. Harvey Kliman, Reproductive Associates has several endeavors which are pushing forward the frontiers of infertility research. As one example, we have discovered that many infertility patients have subtle abnormalities in the appearance of their uterine lining, a problem known as dyssynchrony. Other researchers have linked this problem to endometriosis, and we are developing a large clinical data bank of patients to eventually address this possibility. In recognition of the important link that academic infertility research has to the practice at Reproductive Associates of Delaware, Dr. Feinberg was recently promoted to Associate Professor (Adjunct) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine.

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS): THE INSULIN CONNECTION

The problems associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are well recognized in our field. At Reproductive Associates, we have developed a unique protocol for treatment of women with severe forms of PCOS. Recently, our work with the insulin-lowering agent Rezulin(r) was presented at a conference of Delaware obstetrician-gynecologists, sponsored by the Christiana Care Health System. Drs. McGuirk and Feinberg serve on the Advisory Board for the Parke-Davis Women's Health Division, as they strive to learn more about the underlying link between PCOS and insulin resistance. Many women with PCOS are eligible to participate in the approaches and protocols developed at Reproductive Associates to treat this syndrome.
